Joint Attention, Self-Recognition, and Neurocognitive Function in Toddlers

چکیده
Recent studies have attempted to understand the processes involved in joint attention because of its relevance to both atypical and normal development. Data from a recent study of young children with autism suggests that performance on a delay nonmatch to sample (DNMS) task associated with ventromedial prefrontal functions, but not an A-not-B/delayed response task associated with dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, was related to joint attention skills (Dawson et al., 2002). Recent research also suggests that joint attention is associated with dorsalmedial brain systems linked to self-monitoring (Mundy, 2003). This study investigated the relations among joint attention, DNMS, and self-recognition performance in a longitudinal study of 39 normally developing toddlers from 14 to 18 months. The results indicated that development on the DNMS and self-recognition tasks, but not a means end task, predicted joint attention at 18 months. Further analysis showed that the model was only significant for initiating joint attention (IJA). The implications of these results for the neurodevelopment of IJA are discussed.

The role of action prediction and inhibitory control for joint action coordination in toddlers.
From early in life, young children eagerly engage in social interactions. Yet, they still have difficulties in performing well-coordinated joint actions with others. Adult literature suggests that two processes are important for smooth joint action coordination: action prediction and inhibitory control. The aim of the current study was to disentangle the potential role of these processes in the...

INTRODUCTION Facial affect recognition deficits may represent specific deficits and contribute to social dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia. Whether their impacts on social dysfunction are independent to those caused by deficits in basic neurocognition and clinical symptoms needs to be further delineated. METHOD Association patterns between affect recognition and basic neurocognitive ...
متن کاملAn Expanded View of Joint Attention: Skill, Engagement, and Language in Typical Development and Autism.
This study provides an expanded view of joint attention and its relation to expressive language development. A total of 144 toddlers (40 typically developing, 58 with autism spectrum disorder [ASD], 46 with developmental delay [DD]) participated at 24 and 31 months. Toddlers who screened positive for ASD risk, especially those subsequently diagnosed with ASD, had poorer joint attention skills, ...
متن کاملComputerized Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination for Neurocognitive Monitoring of Children with Benign and Malignant Brain Cerebellar Tumor
Background: Brain tumors in the cerebellum site, especially in the cranial nuclei, are most commonly associated with cognitive impairment in children, but the differences in dimensions of cognitive impairments in pediatric benign and malignant tumors are rarely studied. Meanwhile, cognitive impairments in this area are required to be widely studied. This study aimed at using Computerized Addenb...
متن کاملInteracting with NeuroCognitive Robots: A Dynamical Systems View
In this paper, we will explore possibilities of dynamic interactions between human and neurocognitive robots especially focusing on the psychological problems of joint attentions and turn-taking. Firstly, we will show that movement patterns of a joystick-type haptic device which are driven by a simple attractor-based memory dynamics of recurrent neural network (RNN) can introduce novel interact...
